When you walk into this traditional West Village shop, the scent of freshly roasting beans fills your nostrils. The shelves are lined with jars and sacks of dark brown beans, along with coffee-making equipment, tea accessories, and sugar.
The first restaurant opened in 1907, Porto Rico was founded by Italian immigrant Patsy Albanese. At the time, Greenwich Village was seeing an increase in Italian immigrants who set up businesses to meet their culinary requirements. Albanese named the shop after the popular Puerto Rican Coffee she imported and sold - a drink that was so popular in the present, that even the Pope would drink it.
Today, Porto Rico sells 130 varieties of beans from all over the globe at three locations in New York City including their Bleecker Street location, Essex Market and online. The company roasts its own beans and offers wholesale distribution to 350 restaurants in NYC, Brooklyn and Brooklyn.
Peter Longo, the current owner and president of the business was raised over the bakery of his family on Bleecker Street where his father was the owner of Porto Rico. The business is still run by the shop in a similar manner as his father and grandfather.
Sey Coffee
It is located on Grattan Street in Morgantown, Brooklyn's Bushwick neighborhood, Sey Coffee is both a roaster and coffee shop. Tobin Polk, Lance Schnorenberg and their 33-year-old co-founders started roasting coffee in an apartment on the fourth floor just across the street in 2011. They called it Lofted Coffee. Local clients included Greenpoint's Budin, and Soho cart services Peddler and Peddler.
Sey's focus on buying micro-lots, or even whole harvests, from farmers who are one has earned it the praise of New York City coffee enthusiasts. Last year, they made a six-bag micro-lot purchase of Danilo Dones Sitio Catucai 785 from Brazil's Espirito Santo region. The beans were harvested at their peak ripeness and floated to remove any defects. They were then dried on the farm following a 36-hour dry fermentation. The result is a cup with hints of berry lemongrass and melon.

Parlor Coffee was founded in 2012 behind a barbershop, with a single espresso machine. It has since evolved into a burgeoning coffee roastery, with beans that are sold in top cafes and restaurants as well as home brewers throughout the city. Parlor Coffee is committed to finding the finest quality beans, which have gone through a long journey before reaching its roasters.
In their own words the owners "have an unrelenting love of craft and a belief that good coffee should be available to anyone." They do just that by creating a simple space on a residential street--think compost bins, a chalkboard welcome handmade up-cycled products, and a minimalist deco.
They roast and make their own blends and single-origins (there were six on the menu when I was there), but they also do cuppings Sundays, which are open to the public. Think of it as the tasting room of a brewery. You can smell and taste the beans, ranging from chocolaty to earthy (one was almost tomato-like!). They're away from the tourist trail however, they're is worth a visit.
